Preble County Food Pantries Benefit from Motorcycle Poker Run
Monday, July 11, 2005
Fifty motorcycles carried food and riders throughout the beautiful
countryside of Butler, Preble and Montgomery counties this past
Saturday. The event generated over 150 cans of food and $300.00 in cash
which will be divided between two food pantries in Preble County. The
cost to ride was a $5.00 donation and two cans of food per person.
The 75 mile poker run started at The Golden Key Lounge, located at the
intersection of Rts 127 and 73, just inside the northern border of
Butler County. "The Key", as many call it, is a large establishment
with a nice sized dance floor, a covered courtyard with picnic tables
and a drive-thru. From there, the ride stopped at the 230 Club (Eaton),
Joe's Hillcrest Tavern (Lewisburg), the Lamplighter (Brookville), the
Camden Bar & Grill (Camden) and then back to The Key. The Hillcrest
fed the hungry riders lunch with 90 grilled hot dogs and potato chips.
The
Once
Around Thrift Shop is one of the beneficiaries of the event.
Located at 113 S. Cherry Steet in Eaton, it is operated by
Luthern Social Services of Mid-America
and was established in 1984. Their food bank provides emergency food
assistance for individuals who are in need. Food donations are always
welcome and can be made on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays from
10am to 4pm. For more information contact the Eaton store at
937-456-6560 or oats.eaton {AT} lssma.org.
When the store is closed on Thursdays, food assistance is provided by
the Community Action Partnership. CAP can be reached by calling
937-456-2800 or emailing ritad {AT} cap-dayton.org.
The second beneficiary is the food bank operated by the Higher Heights
Church of God in Camden. Last year, the church's food bank helped 1424 families, which is 3693 people! Their food bank hours are Tuesdays from 3:00 pm to 5:00pm, and Fridays from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.
If you need assistance, please call them at 937-452-3600. Services given by Rev. Marvin Hocker, are held
Sundays at 9am and 11am, Sunday School at 10am and Wednesdays at 7pm.
The church's office hours are 8:30 am till 3:00 pm, Monday thru Friday.
The group coordinating the poker run consisted of Harley, who has been planning motorcycle events for 12 years, Katie and Don, and Jimmy. Katie said they chose the food banks for two reasons. One, they would be
assured the money raised would go where it was intended and the other,
because more than one family would benefit from their efforts. They
were all pleased with the turn out and how smooth the event carried
out. This was the first year for an event that they plan on calling the
Annual Poker Run for Food.
